I have had cats my whole life and work as a catsitter. So my insight would come mostly from my personal experience of catsitting and partially as catowner.Yes cats miss their owners when they go away. When I go to catsit and they usually know me it depends per cat how they respond. Usually it's the first 1–2 days they keep a bit distant from me as they seem to think where did my owner go. But after they came to turns with me being there they become happy to see me. Greeting me at the door and give me lots of cuddles. It depends a lot on how long the owner is staying away but usually after approx 10 days they are changing behaviour to create some distance and start to search for the owner as they feel they miss the owners. I am already putting a lot of effort and time into my catsitting time by really engaging with the cat. And when they reach that point I always try to see if they want more attention or opposite. If they don't want attention I just stay a bit extra time to see whether they will come around. If not I will go but it's usually lasting about max 2 days that they don't want to engage much. After that it will be okey again. But yes it's clear they miss their owners especially when they stay away long. But ofcourse it all depends per cat and how well they know me. But generally speaking I have experienced it's like between 7–10 days that a cat will change behaviour towards me making me aware they are becoming fed up. And when the owners are coming home the cats are not angry or extra needy for attention.🙂See below a cat during my catsitting time:As an owner my cats are extremely happy when I return from anywhere especially a full day but can be also 30 min lol. So yes I know they miss me but one of my cats is extreme in that. Others are having normal behaving. His name was Otis. He was lovely and such a character! He was my shadow, followed me everywhere and talked to me. He was also very cuddly with others. He was a certifiable lap-cat. However, there was a catch. If he sat on your lap and you wanted to get up… you had to do some acting…you had to yawn and stretch. As soon as you did that he would happily get up, yawn and stretch himself and walk away. We just got back from a 5 day trip with our cats having been boarded. Velvet experienced separation anxiety when we were away. She is angry with my wife now and doesn’t want to be near her or relate to her. That’ll likely last about 2 days. For whatever reason she doesn’t seem to be ticked off with me. She slept beside me after we brought the cats back home. Peach took advantage of Velvet’s being upset and interfered with her eating and her use of the litter box. Kind of interesting. When we got Peach, that was what Velvet did to him for months on end! They’ll get over it. I always left more than enough food, water and clean litter, and my two cats, Sam and Abby, seemed ok with the arrangement. For longer trips, I'd hire a pet sitter to come in to feed and play with them, but for shorter trips, they seemed fine on their own. This night, however, I entered my apartment and stopped cold. Things weren't right,. Stuff was scattered all over the living room. With mounting concern, I peeked into my bedriom and saw my clothes strewn about. Most of the drawers of my dresser were open; clearly, someone had ransacked my apartment. And my cats, where were they?! I didn't see any open windows and the patio door was still locked. A couple of years ago his family went away for almost two months and they left him at the house so he wouldn’t have the stress of a cattery. We has a gazebo up to keep some excess stuff that was kept in the garden, sheltered. Most of the time I would find him lying on a soft spot under the gazebo whenever I went outside. So I would go out in the mornings to give him some attention. I could tell he was missing his family because he barely left that spot and was mopey most of the time. He looked sad in his face.
